Repetitive Strain Injuries
Defining Repetitive Strain Injuries

Repetitive strain injuries are diagnosed as conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, tendonitis and tennis elbow. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) are cumulative, developing over a period of time. These painful conditions are a result of performing the same task in the same range of motion over and over without taking precautionary measures. Repetitive strain injuries affect men and women of all age groups. Most repetitve strain injuries are conditions that can be prevented.

Repetitve strain injuries are on the rise. Below, the statistics provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics are presented. Remember these reflect only the number of cases which have been reported.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition which affects the hand and wrist. This is a condition that once contracted is not easily cured and often results in surgery which is not always the cureall. If you are a computer user concerned about early symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, take action now. The "wait and see" attitude may only worsen your pain.

Some of the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are:

  • Feelings of numbness
  • Prickling sensation
  • Tingling and pain in the thumb, index, middle finger (may get worse at night)
  • Cold hands
  • Pain in the hands which may extend up the arm to the shoulder
  • Feeling swollen in the fingers but fingers are not swollen
  • Stiffness of the hands and fingers
  • Weakness in one or both hands
  • Joint pain/wrist pain
  • Loss of coordination; difficulty in grasping objects
  • Weakness in grip - tasks such as tying shoes or picking up small objects become difficult
  • Unconscious self-massaging of hands, wrists and/or arms

The U.S. Department of Labor reports that Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the "chief occupational hazard of the 90's".

We suggest that you visit your primary care physician immediately. Make certain that you describe your symptoms in detail so that an accurate diagnosis is made.
